EMR donates truck to help military veterans move to HGV careers

Sustainable materials firm EMR has stepped up to support veterans by donating a 12-tonne lorry to Veterans into Logistics, a nonprofit that trains and places ex-military personnel into HGV driving jobs.
The official handover took place on January 16 at EMR’s Salford site, with Manchester’s mayor, Andy Burnham, and EMR’s top team in attendance.
Veterans into Logistics, founded in 2020, helps former military members navigate the path to HGV driving through training, mentorship, and funding. EMR already employs many ex-military staff – over 10% of its drivers and key personnel come from military backgrounds, which the firm brings discipline, teamwork and adaptability to the company.
The lorry donation is set to train dozens of veterans, and EMR is also stepping in as a platinum sponsor of the charity. This includes offering employment opportunities to veterans who complete the programme.
“We’re incredibly proud to support our veterans by donating a heavy goods vehicle to Veterans into Logistics to help train and equip veterans with the skills they need for rewarding careers in HGV driving,” said Ian Sheppard, MD at EMR.
“Veterans face significant challenges, including unemployment and homelessness, while the demand for HGV drivers grows. This partnership allows us to give back, helping veterans build fulfilling careers and make a lasting impact.”
With the UK’s ongoing shortage of HGV drivers, veterans are a natural fit for logistics roles, offering reliability and dedication.
Darren Wright, founder of Veterans into Logistics, added: “This generous donation from EMR will enhance our ability to provide hands-on training, giving veterans a pathway to stable jobs and brighter futures.”
