Volvo Dynamic Steering upgrade helps truckers stay safe after a blowout

Volvo Trucks has launched a major upgrade to its Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) system, which is now capable of detecting a front tyre blowout and helping keep the truck stable and in lane – a move aimed squarely at improving road safety for HGV drivers and other road users.
“A flat tyre can easily cause a truck to suddenly veer to the side and the consequences can be fatal. This innovation improves safety for drivers and surrounding road users and makes our Volvo Dynamic Steering system better than ever,” said Anna Wrige Berling, traffic safety director at Volvo Trucks.
When a front tyre bursts, the sudden air loss typically causes a vehicle to jerk sideways – a difficult situation for any driver to control quickly. Volvo claims upgraded VDS reacts instantly, before the truck begins to veer, reducing side forces and helping the driver maintain a straight course.
But it’s not just about emergencies. Apparently, Volvo Dynamic Steering also supports drivers during long, demanding shifts. It reduces steering effort at low speeds by up to 75%, while minimising vibrations and adapting to changing road conditions. This means less strain on drivers’ necks, shoulders and backs – and reduced fatigue on long hauls.
First introduced in 2013, VDS has been helping truck drivers steer more comfortably for over a decade. The latest version builds on that legacy with its added safety function and continued support for smoother, more controlled driving.
The upgraded system is now available on the Volvo FH, FH Aero, FMX and FM models. Drivers and fleet operators can contact their local Volvo Trucks dealer for details on availability and pricing in the UK.
